Ghana govt to institute unemployment insurance scheme – Finance Minister

The government of Ghana will is all-set to institute unemployment insurance scheme in the country, Finance Minister Ofori Attah has noted.

The policy which will be rolled out withing the next six months will cushion the unemployed in the country amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘The scheme will provide temporary income support to workers that are laid off and also provide them access to re-training to help them take advantage of employment opportunities in new fields,” he said.

The finance minister made this know, among other policies that will be rolled out in the next six months, during his presentation of the midyear budget review on the floor of Parliament.

Including a GH¢100 billion Ghana Cares Obaatanpa Programme, government will also between now and December 2020 reduce CST from 9% to 5%, establish a GH¢2 billion Guarantee Facility to support all sectors of business and job retention and create a GH¢100 Fund for Labour and Faith-based organisations for retraining and skills development.”

Government will also “increase the CapBuss Programme by GH¢150 million to, among others, facilitate credit of GH¢50 million to support the Creative Arts, the Media
and the Conference of Independent Universities, retain provision of free water for the next three months and retain free electricity for all life-line customers for the rest of the year.”
