Tensions have escalated at Tamale Technical University, where a peaceful protest by students turned violent following police intervention.
The students are calling for a forensic audit into allegations of financial mismanagement by the university.
What started as a peaceful call for transparency has ended in chaos. At least four students from Tamale Technical University are nursing injuries after police reportedly fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse a student protest on campus.
The demonstration, organised by the Students’ Representative Council and the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana, focused on allegations of financial mismanagement and inadequate welfare conditions.
The student leadership accused the university management of neglect and delays in the issuance of students’ certificates after graduation over the past two years, which has hindered their ability to seek employment.
Students are urging the Minister of Education to take action, as concerns rise that inaction could jeopardise the institution’s credibility and the future of its graduates.
So far, the Ministry of Education has not responded. However, as pressure increases, student leaders assert they will continue to fight for justice until their concerns are addressed.
