Twenty-five years jail term for rape is not enough – Stephanie Karikari

Former Miss Ghana Stephanie Karikari continues her campaign against rape and this time she has waded into sanctions that should be meted out to rapists.

The 2010 pageant winner was in the news a few weeks back after she called on policy makers and parents to ensure their children are educated on reporting rape acts at a very tender age.

She also called out parents who hide rapists in their homes in the name of ‘family secret.

Ms Karikari was speaking on Accra-based TV Africa with Roselun Felli where she opined that the seven to twenty-five years jail terms for rapists was too small.

She likened the act to murder, and called for same jail term.

She said “for me, I feel like we need to put in more policies for rape. The sentencing for rape is from seven to about twenty-five years, I don’t think its enough. Rape is like murder. Rapists shouldn’t even get bail.”

“Murders in Ghana do not get bail, its difficult to get bail. So, it should be the same for rape, because rape is like murder. I think seven to twenty-five years is way too small.”

For parents who hide rapists in their homes, she noted “for parents who hide I think its all in the mind. We need to start massaging the fact that its okay to report. If your husband is sleeping with your daughter and you don’t find anything wrong with it and you think you need to protect him over your daughter then there is something wrong with you.”
