Sustainable fashion can play a critical role in advancing climate awareness, Ghana-based content creator CW Abeniade said, calling on digital creators to spotlight environmentally responsible fashion choices and amplify climate conversations.
Speaking on the sidelines of the second TN Africa Digital Journalism Summit in Kenya, Abeniade emphasized that fashion and climate change are deeply connected, and influencers in the lifestyle and fashion space must intentionally use their platforms to push sustainability narratives.
“I’m also into sustainable fashion myself, and anything when it comes to fashion, climate change is not far from the conversation. So I feel like it’s only ideal for me to be here to also have my voice to push the right agenda for climate change,” she said.
Abeniade noted that sustainable fashion offers an accessible entry point into climate awareness, particularly for young audiences. By promoting thrifting, outfit rewearing, ethical brands, and conscious consumption, she said creators can influence behavioral change without making sustainability seem expensive or complicated.
She stressed that every niche has a role to play in climate communication. “Everybody has their niche. Some people concentrate on climate change, some on fashion, some on other areas, and that’s what makes the whole conversation beautiful,” she said.
Her remarks formed part of discussions at the summit focused on Telling Africa’s Climate Change and Food Story in the Digital Age, which brought together journalists, influencers, and climate advocates from across Africa.
Abeniade said increasing visibility for sustainable fashion stories could help audiences understand that climate action is not limited to policy or science but extends to everyday lifestyle choices.
“The outcome of this summit is going to be a positive one because people here want to be heard more and want to make the change,” she added.
